Hotmail uses powerful Microsoft technology to block more than 4.5 billion unwanted e-mails every day, and to help keep junk e-mail out of your inbox. If you receive a message that Hotmail thinks is spam, junk, or a phishing scam, a number of alerts and actions may take place to help prevent your computer from possible harm.

Manage Spam
Manage Spam
  1. Mark a message as Junk

If you receive spam in your inbox, you can mark it as junk by selecting it and then clicking Junk in the menu bar. This marks the sender as unsafe and moves the message to the Deleted folder.

  2. Mark a message as Phishing Scam

If you receive a suspicious message that appears to be falsely mimicking a real company or that is requesting personal information, you can mark it as a phishing scam by selecting it and clicking Mark as in the menu bar, and then Phishing scam. This reports the sender and completely deletes the message.

  1. Junk mail safety bar

When you preview or open a message that Hotmail identifies as junk, a yellow safety bar notifies you that the e-mail will be deleted in 10 days. You can elect to open the message if you know it is safe.

  2. Blocked content safety bar

When you preview or open a message from a sender that Hotmail is unsure of, a yellow safety bar notifies you that attachments, pictures, and links in the message have been blocked. You can elect to show the content if you know the message is safe.

  3. Blocked message safety bar

When you preview or open a message that Hotmail suspects is a phishing scam, a red safety bar notifies you that the entire message has been blocked for your safety. You can elect to open the message if you know it is safe.
